Vertebral Compression Fractures

During the 1980's and continuing into the mid-1990's minimally invasive procedures were developed to treat VCFs. VCFs can vary in degree and classification. The most common fracture type is a wedge fracture caused from compression of the anterior portion of the vertebral body creating a wedge shape.

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty techniques have become the gold standard for vertebral compression fracture repair. During a vertebroplasty procedure, bone cement is injected into the vertebral body to stabilize the fracture. In a kyphoplasty procedure, a device is used to mechanically restore height in the fractured vertebral body followed by the injection of cement to provide stabilization. Alphatec Spine has entered the VCF market with its OsseoFix Spinal Fracture Reduction System.*

The OsseoFix system consists of a deployable implant that is designed to facilitate the correction/reduction of vertebral compression fractures from T1-L5. The system provides internal fixation and stabilization by using titanium implants in conjunction with a PMMA bone cement, OsseoFix+ Radiopaque Bone Cement. This versatile System includes multiple implant sizes enabling surgeons to treat VCFs through transpedicular or extrapedicular approaches.
